The brake pad, converting the kinetic energy of the car to thermal energy by friction, plays an essential role in the car’s braking system. Nevertheless, the disappointing fact is that since they are much softer, they wear faster, creating even more dust than the ones made from asbestos. Besides, although nonasbestos organic brake pads work well in normal street driving, once exposed to high temperatures or heavy load, they lose their high efficiency in stopping the car. Thus, they are only suitable for small cars that don’t do much aggressive driving, with limited hard stop and the light weight of the car being the necessities as well.

 

A metallic brake pad is another option for your car. Made from iron, copper, steel and graphite, metallic brake pads give superb performance in dissipating heat generated by friction between themselves and brake rotors. The reason why they are so popular among the vehicle users is that they are really cost-effective and durable. Nonetheless, the metallic ones are so heavy that they don't make a good choice for high performance racing. Also, since they are very hard, they can cause more wear on the brake rotors than other types of the brake pads do. Moreover, when the days getting cold, it might take slightly longer than usual for the car with metallic brake pads to stop, for the metallic ones work best when they’re warm.

 

Light and durable, ceramic brake pads might be the best of all the types of the brake pads. Made from ceramic fibers, filler material, bonding agents and a small amount of copper fibers, the ceramic brake pads make themselves the best partner of the sports cars. However, due to their high price, they are not as popular as the two types mentioned above.
