F1: Will Caterham Stay on the Grid?

After missing two grand prix last year and returning backing to the grid in Abu Dhabi finally through a crowdfunding project, Caterham is now struggling with the buyout of the team.

Caterham administrator Finbarr O'Connell recently said: “I'm very conscious that a time will come when it will not make sense for anybody to invest large sums of money in racing the Caterham team for the 2015 season. Time will just run out.

“I'm not going to stifle any interest, but time is definitely running out.”

Indeed, there are not many people out there feeling optimistic about the future of this beleaguered team. F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone even said: “Caterham, I don't think there is much chance of saving them, but Marussia there is a chance.”

How ironic it is! After all, Marussia was once the most likely disappearing team on the F1 grid as they missed more races than Caterham in 2014 season. And not long ago, they even planned an auction of equipment. However, according to Ecclestone, now there is an interested party who wants to buy Marrusia. Admittedly, though Marrusia missed final three races last year, it still claimed ninth place in the 2014 Constructor’s Championship, ahead of Caterham, who have never scored a point in five years.

Despite all of the distressing news, O'Connell, Caterham administrator, is still hopeful.

He said: “I am still hopeful. As long as there are people (out) there who have got a real possibility of doing something, I'm not going to close it (the team) down. Because if I do, then I will just be organising an auction as regards the assets -- which I can do at any stage anyway.”

Also, he said: “I've had people visiting the site. Some people are trying to find a way to make it work for them. We will do anything we can to make it happen, but it's really in the hands of the prospective purchasers.”
