How to Choose a Car Battery?

A car battery is a type of rechargeable battery that supplies electric energy to an automobile, powering the starter motor, the lights and the ignition system of a vehicle’s engine. Thus, choosing a suitable battery for the car is very important, but how to choose a car battery? Don’t worry. Maxspeedingrods is here to help you.

There are some factors you need to take into account when choosing a car battery and the first of them is the size. Size or group size refers to the height, width and length of the battery. And it is important that the battery fits snugly and securely in your car so that you should refer to your car manufacturer’s manual to know your car’s specific group size or you can go to the shop that has grouped the size by the car make and model for information.

The second factor deserving your attention is the age. Batteries usually come with a manufacture date on them, and they should be sold within six months of that date, so that check the date carefully when you make a purchase.

Though the word cold cranking amps (CCA) might be strange to you, it is something you need pay special attention to if you often drive in extremely cold climate, because it is a measure of the battery’s ability to start a car at 0 degrees F (-17 degrees Celsius), when the engine oil is thick and the battery’s chemical potential is low. The higher the CCA, the better it will start in the cold. Remember that.

The last one is reserve capacity (RC), referring to the battery’s standing power—the minutes the battery can run by using its power alone. However, reserve capacity of the battery is not usually printed on the label so that you should check the product literature or ask the shop assistant to know the exact RC rating.
