F1: Ferrari Late for 2015 Car Design

Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne admits that the team started the 2015 car design late, but he is also confident that the prancing horse will catch up due to the lifting of the engine homologation deadline.

At the end of last year, Ferrari’s technical director James Allison found out a loophole in FIA’s regulation that there was no engine homologation deadline for the 2015 cars. And at the end of last month, FIA finally confirmed the lifting of the engine homologation ban during the 2015 season. Therefore, Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault now can all bring updates to their power units over the course of the season, giving the audience a more exciting and intense F1 show.

Marchionne said: “We're starting the season a bit late because the design of the new car was started late.

“But we don't have to freeze the engine by the first race, so it will be a very interesting season.

I think the car will get better as we go through the year.”

Having suffered its first winless season since 1993, Ferrari indeed had a disastrous F1 season last year. Thus, it is undergoing a series of enormous change inside, with Sergio Marchionne replacing legendary president Luca di Montezemolo, Maurizio Arrivabene employed as team principal and Sebastian Vettel joining in place of Fernando Alonso for 2015. Marchionne seems to be quite satisfied with the current reconstruction of the team.

He said: “We have a new guy, a team principal, who has been involved in racing a long part of his professional life - Maurizio Arrivabene. And he's busy now. We've got a technical guy, Allison, who's taking over the technical side of the business. So we've got the team. It was time for a change.”

Besides, he made it clear that the poor performance the team has delivered for years is the reason for current reconstruction.

He said: “I think Luca has done a great job of leading that business for 23 years, but we hadn't won an F1 championship since 2008. We had a disaster of a season in 2014, and I think organisations tend to get lazy, so it was time to bring about some change.”

Moreover, he pointed out the importance of F1 sport for the prancing horse.

He said: “On the road car side [business] is doing tremendously well, but at the heart of the success of Ferrari is what it does on the Formula One track. And if it doesn't get that right, if it doesn't fight properly, then I think it will ultimately impact on brand - so we had to intervene.”
