NASCAR: Jeff Gordon Hit Unprotected Wall at Atlanta Motor Speedway

After Kyle Busch’s tragic accident in Daytona 500, Jeff Gordon hit an unprotected wall at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Fortunately, unlike Busch, he was not injured.

The accident happened when Denny Hamlin’s car turned sideways and set off a chain reaction that involved Ryan Newman and Jamie McMurray. And McMurray’s car went up the track and caught Gordon’s left rear, which caused the four-time world champion Gordon to fly down the track, eventually hitting an interior wall, which was not reinforced with a protective layer.

Jeff Gordon was clearly unhappy, though it is not the first time he had hit an unprotected wall. He now has had such experience four times, respectively at Richmond, Las Vegas, Watkins Glen and Atlanta.

Gordon said: “I am very frustrated with the fact there are no SAFER barriers down there.

“I knew it was a hard hit. I was like ‘Man I can’t believe [it].’ … I didn’t expect it to be that hard.

“Then I got out and I looked and I saw, ‘Oh, wow, big surprise. I found the one wall here on the back straightaway that doesn’t have a SAFER barrier.’…

“I don’t think we can say any more after Kyle’s incident at Daytona. Everybody knows we have to do something, and it should have been done a long time ago.”

Actually, after the incident of Kyle Busch at Daytona, Daytona President Joie Chitwood III said that his track’s walls would be entirely covered by SAFER barriers. As for Atlanta Motor Speedway, they had added tire and jersey barriers before this race and it also announced that it would explore adding more protective layers.

In Gordon’s last Atlanta race, due to the accident, the 43-year-old driver finally finished 41st, with Jimmie Johnson earning his fourth victory at the 1.54-mile Atlanta track.

Well, let’s hope that all the tracks can be installed with SAFER barriers soon.
